BMW’s Latest M3 Commercial Is Borderline Hysterical

BMW launched yet another funny clip for the new F80 M3, this time possibly taking things a bit too far. The last two spots were rather funny with interesting catchphrases and a bit of truth behind them.
We had the one where the M4 was seen doing ‘magic’ tricks and disappearing in a cloud of smoke. That, as ridiculous as it sounds, had a bit of truth to it, as Hollywood would like you to believe. After all, we could name at least 10 movies in which one villain or another uses this trick to get away from the cops.

The second was focused on how fast the car was and asked you not to blink or you might miss it. Yet again, a funny take on some real specs of the car. With a sprint of 4.1 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph), you might very well miss the M3 when it going all out alongside you.

However, this latest spot might be taking things a bit too far. That’s because it has an incredible claim in it: The all-new BMW M3 is lighter than ever! Well, let’s take a look, shall we?

The lightest BMW M3 ever made was the original, the E30 model, unsurprisingly. That’s because it didn’t have the impressive size of today’s car, it used a small, 4-cylinder engine and didn’t have all the airbags we got used to today. It tipped the scale at 2,568 lbs (1,164 kg).

Then came the E36 M3 that weighed 3,219 lbs (1,460 kg), the E46 M3 at 3,415 lbs (1,549 kg) and the E90 M3 at 3,583 (1,605 kg). It’s true, some of them were only available as Coupes, but the comparison still stacks.

Now, the current M3, admittedly in Sedan guise, is claimed to weigh 3,353 lbs (1,521 kg). How, exactly, is this the lightest model ever made? Looking over the numbers, it’s exactly the third lightest car in the bunch and the third heaviest, right in the middle.

Sure, if you consider its performance, it’s quite an impressive package but it’s still not the lightest M3 ever made.
