It’s been a long time since we last brought up the quad-turbocharged engine BMW is working on but now, it seems like we are onto some valuable info about it.
According to BimmerToday, the marvelous piece of engineering is coming for sure and they also have some rough estimates as to how much power it will be making. As we told you in the past, the current inline 6-cylinder tri-turbo 3-liter diesel engine fitted on M Performance cars will be replaced by an even more outrageous version.

This one will take the number of turbochargers up to no less than four. That’s right, four turbos will be working on this car simultaneously, offering new heights in terms of acceleration, wider torque and horsepower bands as well as better efficiency.

The question is: will BMW follow in the footsteps of Audi and make some of those chargers electric? That would be an even better solution than using traditional, mechanical ones, but it remains to be seen what choice the engineers went with.

Either way, the German publication is pretty sure that the B57TOP (that its codename, by the way) mill will have around 408 HP and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal. That will be a new world record for a 3-liter diesel production engine.

Just like its predecessor, this plant will be used only on BMW’s M Performance models and maybe their flagship, the G11 750d. That would include the M550d xDrive, X5 and X6 M50d and maybe future X7 if they decided to offer it with a diesel plant.

As far as a launch date is concerned, info is still scarce. Chances are we’ll see it for the first time on the 750d model followed by a launch on the X5 and X6 SUVs and then the new 5 Series together with the upcoming X7.
