Along with the new BMW F15 X5, the Germans released a world premiere for the SUV segment, the first ever Night Vision system with Animal and Pedestrian detection.
As expected, a lot of people were reluctant towards this technology and some even went as far as to say that is completely useless and it won’t work properly.

Justin Bell and Motor Trend decided to put it to the test and see whether in case of an emergency you could actually use the system to get home or to safety relying only on it.

In order to do so, they contacted the Los Angeles Police Department and told them that they’ll try to drive an brand new X5 blindfolded through the city, covering around 10 miles (16 km). Of course, when the LAPD heard that they immediately sent out two of their best officers to escort the crazy journalists.

Now, we should also point out that the term ‘blindfolded’ doesn’t mean what you’d think at the moment. By that, Justin was saying that his windscreen was completely blacked out so that he couldn’t see a thing and was forced to use only the iDrive screen and the Night Vision to get around.

During his short trip he had the chance to see the animal and pedestrian detector at work and he was impressed just as we were. Check it out!
