It seems like the high wigs in BMW’s headquarters finally reached consensus regarding a new crossover, this time, based on the X1. That’s right, we’re talking about the new X2 that has been approved for production according to the most recent info available.
The X2 has been the talk of the BMW town in recent months, as a lot of people said that it would make no sense whatsoever. Well, it might but that doesn’t mean BMW won’t make it. It feels like the SUV fever hit Munich as well.

The avalanche of crossovers, SUVs, and SAVs coming in from Bavaria is getting bigger and bigger. We used to have the X1, X3, X5 and X6 models in the past but by 2017 we will be looking at the X2, X4 and X7 as additional models part of the X range.

That being said, the usual story of Sport Activity Coupes will apply to the X2 as well. It will be based on the X1 which basically means it will have the same underpinnings and only the body shape will be different, migrating towards a more coupe-like stance.

The same engines will be used which means we’ll be getting anything from the MINI range under the bonnet. The 1.5-liter 3-cylinder mills will be the entry-level options while 2-liter 4-cylinder ones will be the top-spec versions.
Power outputs should vary between 136 HP to over 300 HP if we’re to believe the sources that claim M versions will come out. And this is the hardest rumor to believe.

That’s because BMW officials repeatedly denied that they are looking into using the M badge on an FWD model. Even with xDrive, if the car is based on an FWD layout, it won’t be sold under the expertise of the Motorsport division.

The problem would definitely be the driving dynamics of the whole package and nothing else. There wouldn’t be a shortage of customers, that’s for sure.

Another problem would be the fact that the M division is known for its particular approach towards the cars that wear their name on them. To be blunt, they need to be involved in the car’s development from day one, to make sure the elastokinematics are just right. That’s not the case of the X1 and, therefore, if there will ever be a true X1 M, it’s going to be the next generation model.

Our best guess is that we might see an M Performance model out, one that could be possible from all the angles we just told you about. In the meantime, the X2 will come out and will basically complete the X range line-up.
