BMW X1 to Be Produced in China

BMW will assemble a series of models in China, via its joint-venture with Brilliance Auto. The cars built in China will include the BMW X1 compact SUV, the BMW 1 Series and the stretched version of the BMW 3 Series, as Gasgoo reports.

Last week, during the Geneva Auto Show, BMW chairman and CEO Norbert Reithofer announced that the X1 would be the third model to be built at the joint business’ Chinese factory.

At the beginning of the year, BMW Brilliance paused the 3 Series’ production to expand the production site’s capacity and compensated by importing the model. The plant is scheduled to resume production soon, and will use updated production lines that will allow it to assemble a fresh range of models, including the X1 SUV.

The X1 will enter the premium SUV market, where it will compete against cars like the Audi Q5 and the Volkswagen Tiguan. The two VW Group models have recently been introduced to the Chinese automotive market as imported vehicles but they are scheduled to be domestically produced by the end of the year, as China Car Times writes.

On the European market, the BMW X1 comes with an engine line-up consisting of three diesel units and a petrol one. The entry level diesel is a 2.0 liter unit that produces 143 HP and 320 Nm of torque. The next version is a more beefier incarnation of the first one, offering 177 HP and 350 Nm of torque. The most powerful diesel is based on the same engine, but delivers 204 HP and 400 Nm of torque. Customers who want a petrol-powered X1 can choose the 3.0 liter gasoline engine that outputs 258 HP and 309 Nm of torque.
