We didn’t even get to accommodate the idea that BMW will be unveiling a Competition Package for the current M3 that another interesting rumor ran by our ears. The same usual suspect is involved and we’re more than happy that Scott26 decided to share this info with the world.
Apparently BMW is planning a full-scale offensive in terms of hardcore M models and the future will seemingly be decked with a plethora of CSL versions. For some people, that’s bad news but for most of us, that’s extraordinary news.

It would be bad news to those that think that using the 'CSL' name on so many cars would dilute it, but we're more interested in what it may bring to the table today and not history books.

According to the man in question, all CSLs will be based only on the Coupe versions and the first one will be shown in 2016, following design cues from the recently unveiled BMW 3.0CSL Hommage car. That means that significant aerodynamic parts will be integrated into the actual body of the vehicle, something we’ve seen on the Batmobile the last time, the original E9 3.0CSL model.

These will be the most hardcore road-legal cars BMW will be building and they will sit atop exclusive models such as the M4 GTS for example. They will also be the perfect test beds for some of the most innovative tech the Bavarians can fit on a car.

At this point, it’s implied that CFRP and carbon fiber, in general, will play a big part in the manufacturing process, to keep everything as light as possible.

The first car to receive the CSL treatment will apparently be the M2, in 2016, in time for the 100th anniversary of the brand. While enthusiasts were waiting for an iconic, supercar revival on this occasion, we’ll settle with an M4 CSL, M2 CSL, and M6 CSL is that’s what the Germans have in store.

To us, it sounds like the M2 CSL will be a sort of E46 M3 CSL revival and that’s just butter to our ears. The M4 CSL will also be an exciting car to look at and, even though it may mean the death of the GTS, it has all the ingredients to write history. This is the BMW we wanted for quite some time.
