BMW’s design branch, BMW Group Design, worked together with Garage Italia Customs, and their result is a new color and material concept for the i3 and i8 models.
The two partners have showcased the results of their work at this year’s Paris Motor Show, and they are called the i3 and i8 Garage Italia CrossFade.

As you have already observed, the name of these models comes from the idea of the multiple shades of a color, which fades to black on these vehicles.

BMW has already stated that these cars will inspire an exterior design that will be available in showrooms at the beginning of 2017. It is unclear if customers will be offered i3 and i8 models that will have the same interior and exterior design, but there is nothing that would prevent this from happening if we consider the modern production methods employed by automakers these days.

BMW’s Individual branch offers a broad range of colors and materials, so why would the BMW I range to be excluded from customization? We are on the same page here.

There is no reason for BMW i customers to be denied this possibility. Until BMW reveals more about how the production models inspired by these designs will be sold, let’s focus on the two exhibits.

Just like other creations of Garage Italia Customs, these two models have a look that is inspired by a trend that was popular in the late 19th century. The technique was practiced in “Pointillism,” and it created motifs using small dashes of color that were distributed evenly.

The neat trick about this result is that the dim of the colors happens in the viewer’s mind, as the colors are not intermixed. The procedure is so elaborate that it deserves a separate article, and that is why we will not go into further details, but we believe it might be feasible for production.

The interior of both models follows the same trend, but it is done by painting the colors on the Alcantara fabric that covers the interior. The seats are upholstered in “Foglizzo” leather, which is blended with perforated Alcantara for a moving look.

If you like the base shade of blue seen on these cars, we have great news – it is ready to order in the BMW i3 range under the “Protonic Blue” name, but it only comes with the 94 Ah high-voltage battery. Sounds good to us.
