India is by far one of the biggest motorcycle markets in the world, and at the same time, one of the biggest bike manufacturers around, so it kind of makes sense to try and protect the local industry from importers which may become “too active”. While a certain degree of protectionism is easily understandable, in certain cases things become funny… and the most recent BMW entry in the Indian market is such a case.
The latest bike manufactured by the Bavarian maker to make its debut in India is the R nineT, the café-racer-themed machine engineered as a top-drawer base for further customization. However, you’ll be thrilled, and not necessarily in a good way, to learn that the R nineT will be available with a $39,000 (€28,850) price tag.

With the R nineT being a machine created especially for customization, and this process involving more money poured into the bike, this machine has very good chances of becoming one of the most expensive bikes derived from a production model. However, we’re positive that the Indian market has enough wealthy customers which will be willing to spend such money to get a really fancy machine.

The R nineT is the last bike BMW will manufacture with the old(er) air/oil-cooled version of its boxer engine. The 1170cc mill delivers around 110 horsepower at 7,750 revs and a peak torque of 119Nm (88 lb-ft) @ 6,000 rpm, which will put a broad smile on the face of pretty much any rider. Still, the machine is a rather heavy beast, tipping the scales at 222 kg (490 lbs), which makes the engine specs just right for a decent ride in almost any conditions. ABS is offered as standard equipment, and the only color combination available is the official “Black Storm metallic” silver-black livery.

Never going to stop wondering how high the bike prices are in India when it comes to big-bore import machines… Follow the link for a HUGE high-res photo gallery of the BW R nineT.
