If 2009 was the year of thundering bankruptcies and an almost total collapse of the American car industry - while the Japanese more or less flourished - 2010 seems to be the exact opposite. After announcing their withdrawal from the sport of Formula One last Wednesday, it was only natural for the media to start rumoring on where the Munich based manufacturer will redirect their money in terms of motor racing programmes. In the same press conference where they announced their F1 quit, the BMW representatives themselves admitted they will focus on other forms of motorsports.

While most of us were thinking – or hoping, to be more accurate – of BMW as a potential returnee to the Le Mans 24 Hours Race, it has now emerged that the German car maker is now considering a comeback into the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM). The speculation first appeared in the British publication Autosport, after it brought together the declarations of two high-profile members of the BMW board.

We have deliberately spoken about an involvement in touring cars in the broader sense,” said BMW board member Klaus Draeger, according to the aforementioned source.

BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen, however, admitted that he's not at all pleased with how his team has conducted business in last year's World Touring Car Championship and, although no decision has been made, is considering all possibilities for the upcoming year.

WTCC is part of the touring car spectrum. It is no secret that we aren't particularly happy about the developments last year and this year, but no decision has been made. In any case, we will be present in touring car racing, both with works-supported programmes and in customer competition. We could also imagine other future projects, which we are not ready to talk about yet,” said Theissen.

It seems the DTM's latest announcement concerning the freeze in development for the upcoming 2 seasons has made quite an impression for the German car maker, as they can now join the series without being forced to play second-field to the existing big guns Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
