Doing the fastest lap around the Nurburgring has been the way most manufacturers with a claimed motorsport experience have been measuring their .... performance for many years now. It's such a disputed challenge that some companies are actually using it for marketing. One of those companies is BMW.
The new track cars from the Motorsport division in Bavaria, the recently released BMW F80 M3 and F82 M4 are true to their heritage. So true, in fact, that they are over 15 seconds faster than their respective predecessors.

At least that’s what various reports on the internet are claiming BMW told them at the recent M3 and M4 launch held in Portugal. Most of them say that the officials bragged with a time improved by around 15 seconds compared to the retiring E92 M3 model, around the famous track.

Since the aforementioned official laptime was of 8 minutes 5 seconds flat, that would put the new duo around the 7 minute 50 seconds margin which would be just as fast as the E46 M3 CSL and 2 seconds slower than the E92 M3 GTS.

Something tells us that might not be the case. That’s because being on par with a car that is now 11 years old and slower than a special edition predecessor is not really to BMW’s liking.

Furthermore, the recently launched Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy model has a rumored lap time of 7 minutes 45 seconds which, if it’s true, would put the M3 at shame.

That’s because the Renault is both front-wheel-drive and lacks around 150 HP and 190 Nm (140 lb-ft) of torque. Not to mention that the Bimmers are full-on M cars and that time would be simply shameful, considering the much marketed Motorsport division’s history.
