BMW will be turning 100 next year, and a lot of people have hurried to say that they have to launch some kind of supercar for this occasion. As much as we’d love to see that come to fruition, we received word that they are actually going to reveal a couple more surprises than we expected in 2016.
The most important seems to be a new concept, one that will be showing us just how much importance the Bavarian company is offering its i sub-branch. Rumors said that BMW is working on a new i car, but nobody knew exactly what it was going to be.

Most of us suggested a sedan while some went even as far as to say that it’s going to be an SUV, probably influenced by the rising numbers of the segment. However, according to insider Scott26, the Germans are working on a plug-in hybrid sports sedan.

The concept will be unveiled next year, and the production version will be available for sale somewhere around 2020, as BMW officials said in the past.

On the exterior, this car too, like the i3 and i8, will have to be special, have its own identity that makes it look like it’s coming from the future. Since we’re talking about 2020 here, expect some really interesting styling cues and interior tidbits that have to be still ahead of the curve by the time the production car comes out.

At the moment, the designers are studying what kind of doors should be used, three potential takes being considered. One of them is a single door on the side that pivots upwards, another one has the doors twisting towards the back while one follows the i3 suicide combo.

As far as the construction and powertrain go it seems like the same principles will be used, with the focus being on efficiency but without overlooking the sporty side of things. The cabin will be made of carbon fiber, and it will be mounted on an aluminum chassis to take down the weight as much as possible.

Propulsion will be ensured by an internal combustion engine and an electric one working together as seen on the i8. Furthermore, autonomous driving features as well as inductive charging will be included.

The best news is that the same tech is expected to be later introduced on more models and popular ones too. For example, the 3 Series model that is expected to be launched in 2025 will probably have the same construction for a lighter footprint as well as inductive charging and other innovative features.
