The BMW GS Survival Tool is a new multi-tool from the German manufacturer that goes hand in hand with the needs adventure-seekers might be confronted with when they are away from home.
Being stranded with a defective motorbike in the middle of nowhere and even with no cell phone coverage isn't, however, exactly the type of adventure people are looking for. So here's the BMW GS Survival Tool, a response aimed at making a big difference in the hour of need.

According to the Bavarian maker, the Survival Tool is the result of a research BMW carried out among experienced GS riders to find out what type of problems they encountered and how they were solved. Such a study was needed because the final tool had to be a "bare necessity" instrument, light and easy to use, capable of delivering results on site even in adverse conditions.

Designed for the R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure, the BMW GS Survival Tool allows riders to carry out complex repairs and even to replicate spare parts out in the field. It will not transform a rock into a cylinder cover, but BMW says it will help you solve more problems than using a traditional toolkit.

This tool can be used as an axe, a hammer, a pair of pliers, a knife, a screwdriver and a saw, plus it comes with various other parts that add functionality to it.

The standard version is crafted from chrome molybdenum, while the shaft is made of aluminum and plastic to save weight. A full titanium version is also available, alongside one made from titanium and carbon fiber, called BMW GS Survival Tool Pro and BMW GS Survival Tool HP, respectively.

BMW is still secretive as to what parts riders can manufacture in the wild using the GS Survival Tool, but says that the set is accompanied by a "multilingual construction manual for parts made of renewable raw materials." A similar tool is under development for the BMW F 800 GS and F 800 GS Adventure.

While the thingie looks sweet and functional, the price is not going to make you smile. The standard BMW GS Survival Tool is €389 ($442), whereas the Pro version is a whopping €1,479 ($1,680) and the HP model €1,799 ($2,044),available only on April 1st.
