BMW released a special edition of its hybrid sports car, the i8 Protonic Red Edition.
The new version of the i8 only comes in “Protonic Red” paint and will be available for a limited period. The paint finish is mated with Frozen Grey metallic accents. Furthermore, the alloy wheels are painted in “Orbit Grey metallic,” while their hubs feature matte Aluminum paint. Unlike the standard i8, the special edition comes with a different wheel design, BMW’s W-spoke 470.
The interior of this exclusive model includes red double-stitching and carbon-fiber with red contrasting ornaments. BMW will start making the i8 Protonic Red Edition at its Leipzig plant from July 2016. Pricing and availability have not been published yet.
BMW sold 5,446 units of the i8 last year, making the German hybrid sports car a success. According to BMW, the i8 sold more than all the other hybrid sports cars brought together. Brand officials have stated that the i8 has “comfortably exceeded” their sales expectations. This is great news for the brand’s i range, which was an experiment in the premium car market.
Thanks to the excellent sales results of the i8, BMW could persuade itself to make more hybrid sports cars, along with more models for the i range. Even though the extension of this range was already confirmed, and with plans underway, sales results change the way carmakers make decisions with every new model launch. If something is not popular in relevant markets and doesn’t receive a commercial appeal to a sufficient extent to motivate its production, the carmaker would stop making products like it.
Thankfully, this is not the case with the i8, as the hybrid sports car has received this new special edition. The German carmaker will unveil the i8 Protonic Red Special Edition at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. With the unveiling, the company will publish more photos of this version, along with further details on pricing for the markets where it will be available.
