Luxury and good mpg numbers don’t usually mix. People going for luxurious cars didn’t use to pay too much attention to the EPA ratings, but things are changing in the world and so are buying habits. Therefore, the efficiency of even luxury cars is starting to make a difference.
The guys from Kelley Blue Book put together a list of the top 10 most fuel-efficient luxury cars of 2015 and, unsurprisingly, hybrids dominate.
The number 10 spot went to the 2016 Audi A3 TDI. Fitted with a 2-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine, the four-ringed luxury car is reportedly capable of returning 31 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway. It was bested by just one mpg by the number 9 car, the BMW 328d that uses a similar powerplant.
Number eight on the list is the 2015 Lexus ES 300h that boasts with 40 mpg and 39 mpg respectively, this time, the better efficiency being inside crowded cities because of its hybrid layout. It uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine together with an electric motor.
In position seven we have yet another hybrid, this time the 2016 Lincoln MKZ hybrid overtaken by the 2015 Lexus CT 200h in number six, another hybrid. This one, however, returns 43/40 mpg (city/highway).
The top five is kicked off by the BMW i8 with its 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine coupled to an electric motor on the front axle. Despite BMW claiming it will do in excess of 100 mpg, real-life numbers showed it will do 76 mpge combined for the first 15 miles and 28 mpg combined for the next 315.
Number four goes to the 2014 Cadillac ELR while number three on this top 10 is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz B-Class with mpge numbers of 85/82/84.
Surprisingly, the Tesla Model S came in second, only to be defeated by the BMW i3 that tops this list for the second year in a row. That’s because it has a rating of 137/111/124 mpge that is better than Tesla’s 101/102/101 numbers.
