BMW G30 5 Series Could Debut at 2017 Detroit Auto Show

Up to this point in time, the next-generation BMW 5 Series was expected to come out of hiding at the 2016 Paris Motor Show in October. A new report, however, indicates that the G30 5 Series will be unveiled early in 2017, at the Detroit Auto Show.

Word has it the seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series has been pushed back to January 2017. At least that’s what BMW Blog is implying. More than that, this hearsay could turn out to be true because the BMW X2 SAV is slated to premiere in Paris later this year. The BMW-oriented publication also highlights that the G30 “will be unveiled in the upcoming weeks on the Internet,” then the G30 will put through “the first press drives in the fall.”

The sportier brother of the X1 is nice and all, but the all-new BMW 5 Series is the model that will help the Bavarian brand reclaim the top spot in the premium mid-size sedan segment. In order to one-up the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213), the G30 5 Series has a handful of aces up its sleeve.

Firstly, the Bavarian luxobarge will grow in size. Despite that, the G30 will be lighter than the F10 because it is built upon the so-called CLAR platform. Similarly to the latest 7 Series, the 5 Series will use a mix of high-strength steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber in its structure. This should translate into a more rigid body shell and a slight drop in curb weight over the F10 5 Series.

That’s not all there is to the upcoming G30, though. Not only will it be available with the gesture control-enhanced iDrive infotainment system, but the 2017 BMW 5 Series is also expected to get more autonomous tech than the G11/G12. Hopefully, the key fob will be what the label reads, not a touchscreen-enhanced device that needs to be recharged just like a iPhone. On a final note, the 2018 BMW F90 M5 will go all-wheel-drive to harness the mountains of torque produced by an uprated 4.4-liter force-fed V8.
