Initial rumors, a while back, when the F15 X5 was just released, set the launch of the M model somewhere a year later. Here we are, 12 months afterwards and we're still waiting to see the production version of the X5 M.
As the codename behind it will tell you, the upcoming M SUV will be drastically different from the standard model. Unlike previous generations, when they actually used the same codename (E70), this one will be wearing the F85 codename, unlike the F15 'standard' one.

That means there will be some drastic changes happening underneath the body. The most important one will be the drop in weight. While the normal SUV didn't lose too much in this department, when it comes to M models that's something that needs to change.

Having a two and a half ton SUV running around on a track won't do any good to no one. Get it at around two tons and things change drastically. Add some more power than before and a new transmission and you're looking at a winning DNA.

That's basically what's going to happen. The F85 X5 M will be using aluminum and CFRP in every possible place and will get an upgraded engine to deal with them. The power increase won't be too drastic but if it happens, it will be previewing the upcoming unit that will be used on the next-gen M5.

The transmission will also change, going for a double clutch unit like the 7-speed DCT from the F10 M5. Coupled with the xDrive all-wheel drive systme and things are bound to get dangerously close to the 4 second mark in benchmark sprint runs.
