So far we’ve seen the upcoming BMW F48 X1 out testing but it was so heavily camouflaged that we couldn’t make out much of it. This time though, the drivers were caught slipping and our American spy photographers quickly snapped a couple of photos of the car’s kidney grilles.
As soon as they noticed the photographers, the team rushed to cover the car up but, unfortunately for them and fortunately for us, it was too late already. As you can see, compared to the current model, the new kidney grilles seem a tad smaller and shorter by comparison. Furthermore, the subtle 'X' infused in every model from the X Series range is also there, right in the front bumper.

Of course, the smaller grilles might also be due to the shorter nose, as the upcoming variants won’t be using 3-liter powerplants anymore. They will also migrate to the UKL front-wheel drive platform that will be shared with the MINI line-up and the 2 Series Active Tourer (in both 5- and 7-seat alternatives).

Speaking of platforms, the engine line-up will undergo a drastic change. Whereas now the smallest powerplant is a 2-liter, in the future, the X1 will also be wearing a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder plant be that as the sole means of propulsion or in combination with an electric unit. That’s right, a plug-in hybrid model is all but confirmed at this point.

Of course, all-wheel drive models will also be available but they will most likely be fitted with at least a 2-liter 4-cylinder plant using either petrol or diesel.

The start of production for the X1 is scheduled for July 2015. That means we’ll get to see the concept this year at the latest with a premiere for the production model probably scheduled for March, at Geneva. Following in the footsteps of the new model will be a Sport Activity Coupe scale model, in the shape of the BMW X2. That's up for a 2017 launch, though.
