BMW Motorrad announces the introduction of its new premium ABS system called ABS Pro, an upgrade which takes braking safety to a new level. The new BMW ABS Pro is now capable to provide control and braking power modulation in corners, offering even better performance in extreme situations.
The ABS Pro prevents the rear wheel from locking even upon very fast and strong braking lever action. The big variations in steering force and the rear wheel hopping are also reduced, BMW says, providing a much smoother response even when the going gets tough.

BMW describes the principle behind the ABS Pro as the adaptation of the ABS control to the banking angle of the bike and the current situation on the road. Basically, the new ABS Pro uses the readings of the existing sensor array which feed data to the Dynamic Traction Control and the suspension Dynamic Damping Control systems. Roll rate, yew rate and transverse acceleration figures are take into account for tailoring the best brake modulation response.

“As the banking angle increases, the brake pressure gradient is limited more and more at the start of the brake maneuver. This means that the pressure build-up is slower. In addition to this, pressure modulation within the ABS control range is more even. The benefits of ABS Pro to the rider are a sensitive response and a high level of brake and ride stability together with the best possible deceleration on bends,“ BMW Motorrad says.

The ABS Pro function is only available in the Rain and Sport modes of the HP4 machines. Race and Slick modes are sport modes and are intended for track use with highly experienced riders, thus ABS is not needed. BMW Motorrad reminds us that the ABS Pro is a road-oriented add-on to the bikes, even though it relies on race-developed technologies.

So far the ABS Pro is only available for the HP4 version of the S1000RR superbikes. Customers can choose it as an ex-works option, but BMW says the system can also be retrofitted. Retrofitting the ABS Pro will become available from October 2014, for €380 ($513).
