BMW and Toyota Enter New Stage of Development for Joint Sports Car

BMW and Toyota have been working together since 2013, after signing a partnership that was kept away from prying eyes. However, in recent days more and more info about what they are developing together started surfacing.

After showing the world their newest findings in the field of fuel-cell vehicles, this being basically a first show and tell of what they have been working on, BMW also stated that there’s a new platform in development.

This platform would be the basis for at least two future models, both of them sports cars, one from BMW, and one from Toyota. The collaboration has seemingly entered a new phase this week as the two giants have reached an agreement on what the platform will bring to the table.

The biggest luxury car maker in the world and the biggest carmaker overall in the business decided to join forces as developing new models on their own would’ve been a far too expensive endeavor in today’s market.

More and more manufacturers are signing deals with their rivals in order to cope with the demands of today. With the EU and the US putting together more stringent environment legislature every year, research costs have gone through the roof in the attempt of bringing out more eco-friendly cars.

Unfortunately, even though this joint project that will spawn new sport models from both companies entered a new phase, BMW claims that the first components will be tested in 2020 so we’re still pretty far from seeing them.

Our sources claim that the platform discussed will be the basis of a BMW Z4 replacement and a new Toyota Supra, both cars that have a growing following worldwide. While BMW will supply the engines and elastokinematics for the chassis, Toyota would provide hybrid tech as these two are expected to be both highly performant and eco-friendly.
