BMW 435i xDrive Reviewed at 1 Mile Above Sea Level

Guess who’s back? The guys from The Fast Lane Car, of course! Lately they’ve been focusing on domestic cars and kind-of forgot about Bimmers and other cars from outside the US. Well, they’re back and with a vengeance!

This time, they are reviewing a brand new BMW 435i xDrive model and, as usual, they’re having problems understanding it. As before, when they couldn’t activate the Launch Control on an M6, they’re facing the same problem now with a much less powerful vehicle.

Even though the 435i has nearly half the power and a completely different transmission, the sequence is exactly the same as on any other BMW and is one of the easiest on the market. In case you didn’t know, here’s how it goes:
  • stop the car and keep the brake pedal pressed
  • deactivate DSC or enter Sport+ mode
  • shift the lever in manual mode (tilt it to the left)
  • press the brake pedal beyond the kick-down pressure point
  • release the brake.

It’s as simple as that and, even though it looks a lot more complicated when written down, it’s actually really easy in real life and you can get the hang of it in a couple of seconds.

Other than having problems with the launch control, the guys were pretty fair with the new car, pointing out some of its flaws and some of its plus sides, as it is the best car in its segment.

A comparison with the Audi S5 was inevitable but their arguments are mostly subjective, like the interior styling and feel of the materials, one that might differ from one man to another, depending on their taste.

As for the engine sound, there’s no comparison, both in and outside the car, as the inline 6-cylinder architecture sounds better than any V6, including the one on the Audi.

Overall, the price tag made the difference in their recommendation even though they weren’t completely fair with the assessment, focusing on non-essential optional features.

On their traditional 0-60 mph test at 1 mile above sea level, the car did the sprint in 5.5 seconds, definitely slower than the BMW-reported 4.7 seconds. It seems like the air really is different up there...
