Now that BMW told us what it plans to do with the plug-in hybrid technology on the upcoming F30 3 Series facelift model, you might think that our spy photographers might cool it down, right? Wrong! Actually, they just sent us the first shots of prototypes wearing LED headlights.
At the moment, no matter how high you go in the range, the best you can do on the 3 Series is adaptive bi-xenon. With the new model, things seem to take a different turn, the cars in our spyshots below clearly showing LED headlights.

As far as the shape of the lamps goes, we also expect changes but by no means huge. The design will be slightly changed both up front and in the back but don’t expect anything big. Under the skin though... things are looking up.

New engines

If you read our extended piece on plug-in hybrid models, you know that BMW wants to launch the 328e model next year, one that uses an electric motor to move the car around town with no emissions. That model is now a certainty but others might follow as well.

Our own insider at Munich told us that there’s a plan to introduce new B48 petrol engines as well. The 320i, for example, will get the same engine used in the MINI Cooper S, the one making 192 HP and 300 Nm (220 lb-ft) of torque.

There’s also a plan to replace the 328i and 335i models with 330i and 340i versions. For the 330i, a tuned up 2-liter B48 plant will be used with around 260 HP while the 340i will be using a new generation B58 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine making close to 330 HP.

The new models are scheduled to start production, in both sedan and Touring guises, next year, in July. That means we’ll get to see them launched at Geneva most likely, next spring.
