BMW 2 Series Convertible Spied Virtually Undisguised

2014 seems to be the year of the convertibles over at BMW, 3 new such models being revealed over the course of its 12 months, not including the MINI range. Up until now we’ve seen the new 4 Series Convertible and the M4 Convertible unveiled but there’s another model in the works as well.

We’re talking about the 2 Series Convertible, of course, the replacement model for the 1 Series Convertible that went out of production last year. Just like its predecessor, the new model appeals to a different demographic, one that is interested in having fun more than looking posh.

Keeping in line with the cars that came before it, the 2 Series will join the 6 Series and have a soft top that folds in the trunk for a variety of reasons. The most important one, nonetheless, is keeping the weight in check.

Same engines, different performance

Engine wise, don’t expect any changes from the Coupe line-up. Initially, the 2 Series Convertible will come out in 228i and M235i guises in the US, while Europe will have the 220i and 220d models as a bonus, for those looking for a more fuel efficient ride.

Of course, most of the attention will go to the M Performance Automobile, the M235i. Since the drop top is expected to be a bit heavier than its Coupe brother, the performance should drop by a slight margin as well.

Whereas the M235i is capable of doing 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 4.8 seconds with the 8-speed automatic gearbox thanks to that N55 3-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine, the drop top should be close, somewhere around 5 seconds flat. Go with the manual gearbox and you’ll have to add 0.2 seconds to that time.

The fuel consumption will also go up a bit, due to the less aerodynamic shape and the added weight, but don’t expect huge changes.

Plenty of room, premium prices

As we’ve learned from our test drive with the Coupe, you get plenty of room in the back, especially for such a compact car. The convertible should be even more comfortable, especially with the roof down.

Unfortunately, there’s no info about a possible release date for this model. However, judging from the spyshots we have here, it shouldn’t be too far. Prices for this model will probably require a premium over the coupe, probably somewhere around $2-$3,000 more on average.
