After the success of BMW M products like the BMW 3.0 CSL, the mid-engined M1 or the M535i, the Bavarian auto manufacturer continued to make high performance sports cars for the general public, with the latest addition to the esteemed M line-up being the BMW 1 Series.

The motorsport heritage has been passed on to the smallest vehicle in BMW's range, giving birth to a more agile and lighter version of the coveted compact sedan. The BMW 1 Series M Coupe marks the first time that BMW M GmbH is working with a vehicle in that class, integrating race-oriented performance in a car developed for daily use.

The BMW 1 Series Coupe employs chassis technology derived directly from motor racing, which combined with the powerful twin-turbocharged in-line six cylinder engine that provides a neck-snapping 340 hp and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) gives the nimble compact the ability to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standing start in 4.9 seconds while the 125 mph (200 km/h) mark is attained in 17.3 seconds.

The design features on the new 1 Series M are equally impressive to its performance. BMW's M division cleverly incorporated functional and styling features, in an effort to enhance the aerodynamics and handling of the vehicle. The 1 Series M is 55 mm (about 2 inches) wider than the 135i Coupe, in order to provide the vehicle with an optimized axle track, which was needed to accomplish a dynamic behavior that's specific to this model.

The interior is created exclusively for this model, and features sport seats covered in black Boston leather contrasting with the orange-colored stitching and the highly sought-after M-badge embossed in the headrests.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupe will make its first public appearance at the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, with the market launch expected to happen in May 2011 in Germany.
