Bikes Banned after 6PM in DR Congo City Due to Murder Spree
According to the sources, 17 of the victims were riding motorcycle taxis, also known as Okadas. Reportedly, some of the assaults came from people in uniform, with no exact specification as to whether they were military or police.
Unofficial voices claim the number of victims is higher, and if we were to believe the police sources, Lumumbashi is not exactly an African heaven for riders: "11 murders were reported in January, 9 in February, 10 in March, another 10 in April and 9 in May,” Radio Okapi adds. Several suspects have been arrested but for most of these murders, the perpetrators remain unknown.
Jean Oscar Sanguza, Mayor of Lumumbashi explained that no motorcycle is allowed to ride in the city after 18 hrs, and those failing to obey this law will be arrested, riders and passengers, alike.
It looks like we're going to skip any bike trip to southern RD Congo...
