Best Dad Ever Builds VW Bus Bed For 3-year-old Daughter

Since we’ve been doing the autoevolution dance for several years now, we’re assuming you folks are not just car enthusiasts, you dream, breathe and inspire autos. This is why we’re sure at least half of you people wished your dad could turn your bed into a car back when you were a kid. Well, this 3-year-old daughter actually was lucky enough to get one.

So what do you do when you want to surprise your daughter with the coolest bed on the planet, yet buying one of those is too expensive? Building one from scratch was also not something the man who calls himself DIYDad could bare doing. He did, however, adapt and managed to create the bus-bed you see in the picture with less than 100 dollars.

First he managed to find a teenager selling VW Beetle parts on Craigslist, things such as a bumper, hubcaps and some interior door pieces. The pieces were left out after the guy had rebuilt a Buggy. “It struck me that I could build a VW bus around any old bunk bed, bascially hanging panels off that weren’t necessarily structural. So I started with Craigslist again and picked up an used metal twin bunk bed for $30,” the inventive dad explains on his blog.

The funny fellow, who works as a windmill-tilter when he’s not creating crazy things for his family, stumbled upon some difficulties later on but he infused some new ideas in the original plan and managed to get over them in a quite smart way. Take the VW bumper for example, that was created to be attached to the front of an actual bus. Since he wanted to use it anyway, he built little feet and lug-bolted them to the bumper.

Making the bed look as part of the roof of an actual VW Bus was not enough for the brainiac, so he decided the interior should come with what a normal car would. He had some electronics fitted, a wheelbase and even a dashboard replica. The result: the best handmade auto-inspired bed a kid could wish for.

Problem is, the structure is that cool we’re pretty sure the young girl will grow up into a Bus fan, which means the father will eventually need to get a real VW. That might not be as easy...
