Considering the lengthy history that Bentley has had with racing, it might be rather surprising to learn that the automaker had never won a race outside of Europe until this past weekend. In only its third attempt, the new Bentley Continental GT3 racecar was victorious in the final race of the 2014 Pirelli World Challenge season at the Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.
Breaking Bentley’s winless streak outside its home continent was driver (and Le Mans winner) Guy Smith, who also happened to be celebrating his 40th birthday on the day of his win. The race weekend proved to be quite successful for Smith and his Bentley pulling in the top lap time in practice followed by pole position for the race and then, ultimately, a win to wrap up the 2014 season. Even better, Smith’s Dyson Racing teammate came in third place giving Team Bentley two podium finishes.
“I’m delighted for everyone at Dyson Racing Team Bentley. Their operation has been impressive from the moment they took delivery of their Continental GT3s, and this first win is a fantastic and well-deserved result. The Continental GT3 is now a race-winner on two continents, and as we develop our plans to introduce the car in more countries around the world I’m hoping that’s a tally that we can add to,” said Bentley’s director of motorsport, Brian Gush.
Following his big win, Smith heads back to Europe to compete in the Blancpain Endurance Series with M-Sport Bentley for the Nürburgring 1000 km. As for Dyson Racing and Team Bentley, they have a lot of momentum to build on for the 2015 Pirelli World Challenge season.
