Bentley CEO Confirms Mulsanne Convertible Back on Track

Remember when Bentley gifted the lavish motoring world with the Mulsanne Convertible study back in 2012? While the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance at the time delivered the splendid news three years after the event had hosted the debut of Bentley’s flagship sedan, the project never saw the green light of production.
The operation of injecting some open-air into the Mulsanne had been supervised by Wolfgang Dürheimer, Bentley’s CEO at the time, who was subsequently transferred to Audi. The executive’s successor, Wolfgang Schreiber, put the project on ad indefinite hold, explaining that the demand was extremely limited.

As we previously reported, Dürheimer is back in his position (he now helms Bentley and Bugatti) and he’s obviously ready to restart the process.

When I returned, I was a bit irritated by the fact that no work had been done on this project in two years," Dürheimer told Automotive News (subscription required). "It is back on track."

Interestingly enough, Dürheimer was forced to leave Audi after he... cancelled certain project favored by VW Group Martin Winterkorn. Dürheimer axed the R8 and a1 e-tron, showing disbelief in the fuel cell technology that went along with such electric vehicles.

The Mulsanne Convertible, which, given Bentley’s history, should wear the Azure designation may look like it doesn’t have a strong business case to rely on, but not if we pay attention to what Rolls-Royce likes to keep itself busy with.

You see, the Mulsanne is slotted somewhere in between Rolls-Royce’s entry model, the Ghost and the Phantom. Besides the sedan form, the latter is also offered in Coupe and Drophead Coupe (that’s convertible for you non-aficionados).

Sure, Bentley already offers the Continental GT in Convertible trim, but we are talking about an even more elevated society here. Regardless, Bentley is currently working full throttle to develop a vehicle whose market demand is guaranteed, namely its SUV.
