Bahrain Grand Prix Could Return in 2011

The opening round of the 2011 Formula 1 season, the Bahrain Grand Prix, has been canceled, but it now appears that the race might be rescheduled sometime this year. The prospect has been brought forward by the very F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who insisted however that it's unlikely F1 will travel to the Kingdom in the next few months.

Obviously it would depend on the political situation there, so we would not plan anything in the next few months,” said Ecclestone in a recent interview with the Daily Express.

Some reports suggest that the Bahrain Grand Prix could move to the end of the season, with Ecclestone trying to figure out a decent reshuffle of the last few rounds. He ruled out a summer date for the race, as the temperatures in the region would prove too much for an F1 race.

There is a three-week gap in August for the F1 shutdown but the temperatures then would be a bit extreme. Maybe later around the Indian grand prix could be possible if things are OK there (in Bahrain).

That solution would salvage Ecclestone's dream of having a 20-race calendar in 2011. Until a decision will be made on the matter, the fact of the matter is that the new campaign will start off on March 25, with the first practice session of the Australian Grand Prix.

It is sad that Bahrain has had to withdraw from the race, we wish the whole nation well as they begin to heal their country. The hospitality and warmth of the people of Bahrain is a hallmark of the race there, as anyone who has been at a Bahrain Grand Prix will testify. We look forward to being back in Bahrain soon,” added Ecclestone in regards to the situation in Bahrain.
