The Challenger and Charger are getting a little bit old now. In fact, little has changed since the current ones were introduced in 2008 and 2006, respectively. But before the next generations will drop by Dodge dealership lots in calendar year 2018, the two siblings will go out with a big bang. And all-wheel-drive.
As per a report published by Automotive News, “Dodge will introduce its first all-wheel-drive Challenger, called the GT AWD, this fall.” A “wide-body, Hellcat-powered version” will follow in calendar year 2017, expected to bear the name of Dodge Challenger ADR. Pretty exciting stuff, right?

While the cited publication’s report doesn’t say a word on the possibility of an all-wheel-driven Charger SRT Hellcat, there’s been a recent spotting of a prototype Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat with drive sent to all four corners. Coincidence? Simply put, I tend to think not. Furthermore, Jeep is working on a 6.2-liter blown HEMI V8-powered Grand Cherokee, complete with AWD. My gut feeling tells me that the cited report could be right on the money.

In addition to that, the platform that underpins the Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger can accommodate AWD, as proven by the Challenger GT AWD Concept and the Charger SXT AWD. In related news, the next generations of the two-door and four-door models are due to lose considerable weight by moving over to the so-called Giorgio platform. Yup, it's the same platform that's used by the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, the second-fastest four-door sedan around the most gruelling circuit of them all, the Nurburgring.

On a sadder note, rumor has it Fiat Chrysler intends to kill off the 6.4-liter naturally aspirated HEMI V8 and 6.2-liter blown HEMI V8 no later than calendar year 2019. On the upside, Automotive News also mentions that the heavily-anticipated Dodge Barracuda convertible will debut in 2021 and the family-oriented Journey will switch to Giorgio underpinnings.
