Top Gear Australia might not have the notoriety that its British counterpart boasts, but they certainly know how to put on a show. A couple of weeks ago, we showed how a sexy hurdles runner went head to head against a Nissan GT-R and its launch control systems. With over 500 horsepower racing against a woman, perhaps that wasn’t a fair challenge. Now they’re back at it, pitting the speed of a racing car against one of the most agile airplanes on the planet, and this time, the car is the one at a disadvantage.
This turn, Jeremy Clarkson has given up the driver seat in favor of Jamie Whincup, an Australian racing driver who competes in the in the V8 Supercar Championship Series, driving for Red Bull Racing Australia. The 31-year old is a five-time winner in this championship and his weapon of choice is a Holden Commodore.
All racing is just going from point a round in circles back to point A. It’s the best way to burn gasoline and turn it into a spectator sport, but the stunt airplane just adds another dimension to the picture. Underdogs, villains, heros and forgone conclusions – all of these are possible if you can bring the audience a cool automotive story. Yet without Top Gear, none of these pointless but extremely entertaining shenanigans would even be possible. So the Mirror can just put a sock in it, because millions of petrolheads want this sort of stuff. No, they need this sort of stuff.
Oh and if you’re a Ferrari fan and are wondering why this Holden is called a supercar… don’t, just don’t. Stock car racing involves nothing that is stock and touring cars never tour anything.
