Growing cities and the overwhelming numbers of cars populating the urban jungle means less and less space on the streets. Small cars might be the answer, and Audi are among the manufacturers willing to test this theory.
In a time when SUVs crawled from tricky off-road courses and rough mountain paths to become asphalt-devouring monsters both in and outside the city, some carmakers realized we might run out of space as urban conglomerates expand even further. Literally.

Urban mobility is an issue addressed very often these days, and some - namely smart - offer what we call city cars. According to recent reports, Audi might join them in this quest with a car that would rival the Fiat 500 and the Mini Cooper.

Automobile Magazine claims the Ingolstadt-based carmaker is looking to come up with a replacement for the underperformer (and pretty expensive, for that matter) Audi A2. According to the same source, to fulfill their plan, Audi will launch a concept previewing the future city car at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.

Details are scarce at the moment, but rumors suggest the model will be offered in both two-door and four-door configs. Furthermore, a platform derived from the popular MQB could underpin the new urban traveler.

An electric variant with 125 miles (201 km) max range is very likely to show up, but that step will be taken before the internal combustion-engined versions hit the market. We're looking at a two three-cylinder engines: a petrol unit with 111 HP and a diesel mill wearing 100 HP.

The prospect looks good, but the car could show its metal bits as late as 2020, so we're in for a lengthy waiting period.
