Audi R8 V10 Nurburgring Inch-Close Near Crash Makes for Brown Trouser Drifting

Drifting isn't allowed on the Nurburgring, with such shenanigans having the potential to get a driver banned. However, when you're working to save your machine from a crash, you can drift all you want.

Even so, breaking the rules was probably the last thing the guy behind the wheel of the Audi R8 V10 in the video below had to worry about - when you enter a turn at a rate of speed that simply pushes your car off the road, regardless of understeer or oversteer, you can play Metallica and turn up the volume (read: Nothing Else Matters).

Nevertheless, the driver showed respectable skill once his previous-generation supercar started sliding on the grass, heading for the infamous barrier on the side of the track. The guy ended up drifting his R8 on the green part of the... Green Hell, with is prolonged slide being nothing short of Formula Drift-worthy.

For the tech fetishists among you, we'd drop a reminder: the R8's all-wheel-drive, which worked wonders here, uses a non-electronically-controlled hardware that, comes with a default torque split of 20:80 (front:rear).

While we stand behind the accolade mentioned in the title, the story sadly didn't seem like it ended there. While the bewildering drift did save the R8's posterior at first, it didn't kill the Audi's speed.

Once it completed its slip angle shenanigans, the supercar came sliding across the track. Despite the two angles offered by the clip at the bottom of the page, we can't see the outcome of the adventure.

Even so, the soundtrack seems to shed some light on the incident and, alas, this appears to be the kind of ka-bang light. Oh well, at least the part where the supercar skids across the circuit did shed a bit of its velocity, so we can only hope the impact was softer than the one avoided by the driver.
