When Audi introduced the R8 sportscar seven years ago, many of the aftermarket tuning bits and bobs we take for granted today were still on the drawing board, such as cheap carbon fiber bolt-ons, vinyl wrap and twin-turbo power kits.
Now in its last years of shelf life, the R8 can really take full advantage of recent tech, as is the case of this aftermarket tuning package from the guys at mbDESIGN, who worked on a pre-facelift V8 model from 2009 and turned it into something de Silva couldn't even imagine back in 2007.
Starting with the visually impacting wrap, mbDESIGN chose to go for the army look that's so popular after X-Games skier Jon Olsson's cars received a similar treatment. A winter theme is chosen, with white and two shades of gray overlaid in the same pattern seen on the F16 Arctic Aggressor fighter jet of the US Air Force.
That's only the first step of the exterior customization though, as the R8 also received carbon fiber elements, either from the aftermarket world or from Audi, as is the car with the rear wing, borrowed from the limited edition R8 GT. it even has carbon mirror caps and the bigger air blades from the V10 model.
Output of the 4.2-liter V8 engine has been increased to 453 PS, as much as the RS5, by using a K&N air filter, updated engine software and a Capristo exhaust system. To cope with this, the German sportscar also received a set of GT coilover lowering suspension and fresh 20-inch lightweight alloys wrapped in sticky rubber.
