Audi e-tron quattro Concept Teaser Shows Future Q6 Electric SUV for the First Time

We have the first teaser images from Audi that show the Q6 preview concept everybody has been talking about. As its name suggests, the e-tron quattro is an all-electric model, but there's so much more than meets the eye.

Numerous new technologies are being showcased on this Frankfurt Motor Show debut, including the matrix laser OLED system that is said to be superior in every way to traditional LED setups.

Another thing we need to consider is the fact that Audi has a new head of design, 44-year old Marc Lichte. He was responsible for designing the Prologue concept but hasn't been allowed to cast his magic over any SUV. Could this mean the e-tron quattro is also a preview for the upcoming Q5, Q3 and Q1?

We can't say that we're completely in love with this concept yet. It's supposed to look like a coupe, but all we see is a Sportback raked tailgate, not a true rival for the BMW X4 or GLC Coupe. The front is a little to sharply defined as well, but Audi preview concepts are know for this.

Just like on the Tesla Model S, the battery pack for this EV is installed under the floor. It's said to offer a range of up to 500 km (310 miles), which could mean all but the longest journeys are possible. LG Chem and Samsung SDI helped Audi with the development of the system, which could find its way into a sedan model as well, possibly even a Porsche.

Derived from the Q7 platform, but powered by three electric motors

The study is based on the second-generation modular longitudinal platform. Instead of conventional gasoline engines, electric motors are used. In total, there are three of them, one for the front axle and two more for the rear. The setup is a little different than the one used by the R8 e-tron or the Tesla Model S P85D, both of which feature only two motors.

The e-tron quattro concept is set to make its public debut in less than a month at the Frankfurt Motor Show. A full production version will be launched in 2018, being just one of many SUVs that Audi plans to launch by the end of the decade. The list starts with the SQ7 model poised to land in Frankfurt and ends with a crossover member of the TT family.
