Audi Celebrates 100,000th Car Built at New Plant in Hungary

Audi's ambitions growth plans include a massive expansion into the entry-premium market, both the new A3 and the Q3 currently making their way onto US soil. The German company has seen huge demand increases for these types of smaller cars, recently increasing its sales forecast for 2014 to 1.7 million. Yet none of this would be possible without the new production facility in Hungary.

Audi Hungaria has been producing the A3 Sedan and A3 Cabriolet since June of last year, and added the new generation of the Audi TT last month. These cars are all made at a new plant in Gyor, running non-stop to keep up with demand.

On September 11, Gyor reported that it has just finished its 100,000th car, the lovely white S3 sedan you see in the photo above, which is clearly headed for the North American market (orange repeaters in the headlights). The S3 sedan is just one of four body types offered, but it's the only one available in the US right now (soon to be joined by S3 Cabriolet). It's powered by a 2.0-liter TFSI turbo engine delivering 300 horsepower to a standard quattro all-wheel drive system.

“100,000 cars built at the new plant are an important milestone in the Audi Hungaria success story,” stated Managing Director Thomas Faustmann. “They validate the decision to invest in the new automotive plant. The high flexibility and delivery reliability of the Gyor automotive production operations means we, too, are contributing to the worldwide growth of Audi AG.”

With the arrival of the new TT Coupe and soon the TT Roadster, production at Gyor will be boosted even further, to around 160,000 models a year. It's a high number, comparable to annual sales of non-premium compacts like the Honda Civic.

“I take particular pride in the fact that the automotive production team has reached this landmark total in such a short time,”
stressed Gerd Walker, Automotive Production Director.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
