One of our favorite hobbies here at autoevolution is to find specs that the manufacturers can't hide, yet won't put in the press release either. We've recently noticed that the new S3 hot hatchbacks have been priced in Spain, and while looking through the German website, we discovered some details regarding the regular 2016 A3.
As you are already aware, the 1.0 TFSI is the engine of the future at Volkswagen Group. It will completely replace the 1.2 TSI, the unit which in turn retired the 1.6 FSI over a decade ago. Together with the 1.5 TSI, this 3-cylinder unit represents the future of the group and is already playing a crucial role under the hood of the SEAT Ateca, VW Golf, and even the Skoda Octavia.

But last year, Audi officials said their "customers aren't interested in an engine this small." Yet the A3 facelift came out a month ago and will soon be available with the 1.0 TFSI making 115 PS. It's the same engine found in the Golf, and at 200 Nm of torque, it could be pretty nippy.

The PDF file we've attached below will show you that the 5-door hatchback with a 7-speed automatic will reach 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds and push its way to 206 km/h or 128 mph. That's not bad, but we can't help but feel a little disappointed with the rear suspension, which consists of a torsion beam with separate spring-damper arrangement. Sure, you don't need anything more in an entry-level compact, but how is this a premium car?

We did a quick check of the other engines, and the 1.6 TDI has a torsion beam as well, being slightly heavier and slower to reach 100 km/h.

Regarding the subject of the new S3, we've discovered that it makes 400 Nm of torque only on overboost and produces 380 Nm normally. That's not a huge deal, and neither is the fact that the 3-door model is the cheapest you can buy in Spain at €46,400. The sedan will set you back €48,500, and the Cabrio remains the most expensive at €55,400.
