It’s been speculated that Audi wants to build on the success of the smallest car it makes by expanding the range. The regular 3-door was recently joined by the Sportback 5-door, and we’ll get to see a hothatch version as well by the end of 2013.
But that sounds a bit too serious and German, so to spice thing up the A1 will take a page out of the Italian convertible book by creating a cabrio with a peel-back cloth roof like the Fiat 500C. What you see here are the first rendering we could find, created by Theophilus Chin.
Audi boss Rupert Stadler has previously said that making an A1 drop-top would be too expensive, since it would be a stand-alone model (the VW Polo and Skoda Fabia use the same platform as the A1).
However, it seems that the A1 Cabriolet is in the prototype consideration stages, which might mean a business case has almost been formed. The body will likely be a bit different from the 3-door hatch which the renderings are based on.
