Aprilia is recalling all the 2015 model year Caponord 1200 machines which have been sold in the US, plus a part of the 2014-generation Caponords and certain 2014-2015 Shiver 750 bikes. According to the NHTSA and Aprilia, a total of 337 bikes may have been manufactured with an improper output gear shaft and this may lead to problems.
Model year 2014-2015 Aprilia Shiver 750 motorcycles manufactured February 10, 2014, to October 28, 2014 and 2015 Aprilia Caponord 1200 motorcycles manufactured November 14, 2013, to October 16, 2014 have been assembled with an output gear shaft which has an improperly machined surface. This can lead to the fastening screw on the output hear shaft to loosen and could cause the rear wheel to lock up.
Obviously, a locked rear wheel is one of the things you want least happening to your bike while riding, as this is one of the things which can cause very nasty crashes, with serious consequences. However, the NHTSA documents mention that no accident caused by this problem was recorded until now, and no warranty claims have been filed for the specific part.
Piaggio, the group that owns Aprilia, is notifying the customers and has instructed the dealers on how to verify the output gear shaft. If found defective, the part with be replaced with a corresponding one, free of charge. While it’s winter time and few (if any at all) riders are using their bikes, so the chances for nasty stuff happening are really small. Even more, if the Aprilia open up your engines, they might also change the oil, having your bike ready for the spring.
Aprilia has recently launched the new Caponord 1200 Rally, a bike which slots in the big-bore adventure bike segment and is equipped with multiple modern feats, but which seems to be still lacking the nerve of the other similar machines, such as the BMW R1200GS or KTM’s 1190 Adventure or 1290 Super Adventure.
