Apple and Google are trying to integrate smartphones with you car and soon enough, automakers might even ditch their costly infotainment systems. Who wouldn’t like swipe a finger over the same features a phone offers right on the car’s infotainment system? Apple is the first one to roll out its CarPlay system which is now compatible with Pioneer equipment.
Pioneer Electronics Inc. recently announced it became one of the first aftermarket in-car-equipment manufacturers to support Apple’s CarPlay, which is done using a compatible firmware update for 5 2014 NEX multimedia receivers.

This means consumers using the latest version of iOS on their iPhone 5 or newer can upgrade their aforementioned in-dash Pioneer equipment to benefit from the latest connectivity features, including Siri voice control, Apple Maps, iTunes Radio and browse through their music library.

“CarPlay enriches the iPhone experience in the vehicle by providing a safer way to access the iPhone features they want to use most while driving,” said Ted Cardenas, vice president of marketing for the Car Electronics Division of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “With Pioneer’s implementation, CarPlay can now be integrated into millions of vehicles already on the road."

To get the update, a user has to visit Pioneer Electronics website’s firmware section and download the new firmware on a USB memory stick which then has to be connected to the receiver’s USB cable input to get installed. The update will also be available at any authorized retailer across the country.

So yeah, you don’t need to buy a fancy expensive new car to use Apple’ CarPlay feature. All you need is new Pioneer equipment.
