And the First Volts Go to... the US Govt.

We are not sure if this is just a means to promote Chevrolet's upcoming Volt in the eye of the American consumer or just another helping hand for GM, but the US government has decided to buy the first 100 Volts to exit the assembly lines.

If you don't remember, the US own a large chunk of GM, meaning the decision to purchase the 100 Volt, as well as some of the other 5,600 hybrids announced earlier this week, is like you deciding to buy something you make. From you...

"We're going to lead by example and practice what we preach: cutting waste, saving energy and reducing our reliance on foreign oil," president Obama said when announcing the order of the 5,600 hybrids. He didn't specifically say the US will buy the Volt, yet the expression "the first 100 plug-in electric vehicles to roll off American assembly lines" only fits the Volt.

The first ever Volt rolled off the assembly lines yesterday, just as the announcement of the approval of the new national tailpipe emissions limits was being made. The car will be exclusively used by the manufacturer to study the production system and insure that all quality targets are achieved.

The first-ever national greenhouse gas emissions standards and the new fuel economy standards for all new passenger cars and light trucks have been approved yesterday, with all automakers required to improve fleet-wide fuel economy and reduce fleet-wide greenhouse gas emissions by approximately five percent every year, starting with 2012.

By 2016, all vehicles should have a fuel economy rating of 35.5 mpg and average vehicle emission level of 250 grams of carbon dioxide per mile.
