An Electric-Powered Corvette Is the World's Fastest Street-Legal EV. Again

Four months after setting a new land speed record for a street-legal EV with its modified Chevrolet Corvette, Genovation went and did it all over again, adding almost another 20 mph over its initial result.

Considering how easy it was for the converted sports car to set a new record with its first attempt, we were pretty sure the team was going to try and beat it as soon as possible. Not one to disappoint, Genovation worked a little on its vehicle and headed back to NASA's landing strip at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

In early spring, the Corvette that goes by the name of Genovation GXE managed to reach a maximum speed of 186.8 mph, just enough to break the 300 km/h (with 0.6 km/h) threshold and correct the previous record by 16.6 mph (21.9 km/h). Now, on its second attempt, the GXE reached another symbolic milestone by going over the 200 mph mark with a top speed of 205.6 mph (330.9 km/h).

A Tesla Model S is the fastest production EV, but by comparison, it can only reach a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). Of course, as the roundness of the figure would suggest, that is electronically limited to protect the battery pack, and with the limiter off, the Model S could go reasonably faster, potentially even matching Genovation's record. But there's no chance of that happening as Tesla is currently busy breaking records of other nature: in sales.

However, the GXE isn't just a record-breaking car: the company intends to build a limited run and sell it once the testing phase is over. Right now its motors produce over 600 hp and 600 lb-ft (812 Nm) of torque and are fed by a 44 kWh battery pack with a maximum range of 130 miles. If things remain largely the same for the production version as well, its appeal will be quite limited.
