Say what you want, but Chevrolet's green lineup has enough cars to keep EV lovers happy, courtesy of the Volt and Spark, not to mention the upcoming Bolt.
Then again, they are not Porsche or BMW, which means the equivalents for the 918 Spyder or the i8 are missing from Chevy's backyard. This is an excellent opportunity for small manufacturers to jump in and fill that gap, so how does an electric Corvette sound to you?
Genovation Cars has the answer, although the prototype they're working on will be called the GXE (Genovation Extreme Electric). We've been mentioning Corvette because this all-electric concept is built upon the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and should be ready to hit the asphalt by the end of July, according to brand officials.
According to its makers, the GXE will have a range of 150 miles (km) in normal driving conditions and a "near 50/50 weight distribution". More important, it will benefit the expertise of an MIT electrical engineer and a mechanical engineer from Cosworth.
"We are using state of the art inverters, batteries and electric motors that will produce in excess of 700 horsepower and 600 lb-ft (813 Nm) of torque," said Genovation CEO Andrew Saul. "We expect the car to achieve 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) in around three seconds and have a top speed of over 200 mph. And, most of the parts are designed and built in America."
Another goal for the team is to retain all the features initially powered by the stock vehicle's combustion engine; for example: power steering and power brakes, air conditioning and heating.
Sounds ambitious, but we'll just have to wait and see how that goes.
