Of course, we already know what the new Mazda3 range looks like because it's been revealed on the web. But that doesn't mean we're not excited about Mazda's big day under the Frankfurt Motor Show lights, marking the European debut of the Japanese compact.
The cool thing is, rather than put the cars on an airplane and send them to Germany, Mazda took several examples on an epic drive from Japan to Frankfurt. (they're in Russia right now).
Two body styles, hatchback and sedan, make up the third generation family, both designed using KODO language and powered by Skyactiv technology.
Both cars are built around a brand new platform that offers a 2,700mm wheelbase, which is 60mm longer than the old Mazda3's and the biggest of all the C-segment cars. Both bodystyles are 40mm wider and 15mm lower than the current model, while the fastback sedan is 120mm longer than the hatchback.
Both cars will be sold in Europe with a choice of petrol and diesel engines. The basic engine is the 100 PS SKYACTIV-G 1.5-liter petrol four-cylinder. Next up is the 2.0-liter petrol, available with either 120 PS or 165 PS, the more powerful of which can be had with an automatic gearbox and i-ELOOP regenerative breaking. Lastly, there's the most frugal of the bunch, a 150 PS 2.2-liter diesel which produces 380 Nm of torque and is available with a manual or automatic gearbox.
