All-New Hyundai i30 Rendered, Should Arrive in 2017

Wagons are cool again. Look at the Renault Megane GT Grandtour, and you realize money is flowing back into big trunks, especially if they happen to be connected to compact cars.

The Hyundai i30, otherwise known as the Elantra GT in America, just entered a new generation. It's not just going to be one car, as some sort of coupe is planned, along with the obligatory wagon.

You see, some of the development and design work happens in Germany, and the Germans just love wagons. The BMW 3 Series Touring and the Skoda Octavia Combi are all best sellers over there.

Making a rendering of the i30 Wagon probably wasn't that hard for Remco of RM Design. He stretched out the trunk, added some rear quarter glass and voila! It looks generic like somebody made meatball from the fibers and fat of the Opel Astra and VW Golf. But that's not a problem because family car buyers never want to stand out. Or do they?

Hyundai's engine range for the i30 Wagon won't blow you away. Downsizing is the name of the game, as the Koreans have learned a thing or two from Ford's popular EcoBoost and made their own 1-liter turbo engine. It's supposed to produce 120 PS and 171 Nm, so at least on paper, it's got enough punch.

The i30 hatch is also available with the 100 horsepower 1.4-liter, but we don't think it's good enough for the wagon. And finally, the petrol range ends with the 1.4-liter T-GDI turbo-four with 140 hp and 242 Nm (178 lb-ft) of torque.

Of course, most Europeans will want the 1.6-liter diesel, which will be available in three states of tune: 95 hp and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft), 110 hp and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque, as well as 136 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft). On many models, a 7-speed dual clutch automatic can be ordered in place of the 6-speed manual.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
