Our spy photographers have just sent us the first images of a brand new Renault sedan, which is believed to be the Laguna. It arrives only days after the same company started testing a Megane hatchback, indicating that their future could be connected. We've also learned that the new sedan will be shown in the summer of 2015 and a wagon version will follow in 2016.
Even though it's camouflaged, seeing that the sedan looks totally different is easy. There's almost nothing in common from a design perspective with the current Laguna, which is just as well considering how badly it sold. The V-shape at the bottom of the grille goes lower than usual, making way for a gigantic Renault logo. Meanwhile, full-LED headlights are installed and appear to be very narrow. That could indicate LED will be standard, since the space is too small for halogen bulbs and their reflective dishes.
From the side, the Laguna appears to be taking the sexy shape of a four-door coupe, with a very pronounced curve of the D-pillar that reminds us of the Jaguar XJ in a way.
Very little is clearly known about the Laguna IV. "LFD/KFD" internal codes have been rumored as well as the fact that it will only be available as a sedan. The size of the model will be increased in order to better compete with the Peugeot 508 and Volkswagen Passat. Renault is also reportedly streamlining its model lineup and will drop the 4.9 meter Latitude.
The Volkswagen Passat has just won Car of the Year 2015 at the Geneva Motor Show. Renault will face an uphill battle with the Germans, as demand for their family sedans has been dropping steadily over the years.
We expect all-wheel steering to continue being offered as was the case with the outgoing model. The diesel range is pretty much guaranteed to include the 130 hp single turbo and 160 hp twin-turbo versions of the 1.6-liter dCi. However, we don't expect such a large car to sell well without a 2-liter unit. We may also see hybrid tech being used, as Renault is heavily invested into green technology at the moment.
