The replacement for the G-series sedan has been officially detailed by the Infiniti brand ahead of its debut today at the Detroit Auto Show.
The design is a sculpted new model that will face stiff competition from its main rivals, the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes C-Class and also the new Lexus IS. Compared to this last Japanese luxury car in particular, it looks a bit boring, despite being all-new.
The powertrain lineup announced for the US market will include a 3.7-liter V6 with 328 horsepower and a hybrid system combining a 296 hp 3.5-liter V6 and an electric motor, producing 354 horsepower in total.
The European version should also be available with a turbodiesel. Transmission options are limited to the new 7-speed automatic, which can send the power to the rear or to optionally, to all four wheels.
"This morning we are about to launch Infiniti on a bold new journey, a new Infiniti brand direction built on a foundation of our past and guided by a clear vision for the future," said Infiniti president Johan de Nysschen. "And it starts right here today with the new Infiniti Q50, a vehicle that clearly crystalizes the design, performance and technology direction for a new generation of Infiniti vehicles.”
