For those unfamiliar with the model, Hyundai's i20 has been on sale in Europe since 2007 as a supermini, essentially a direct rival to the Ford Fiesta hatchback and based around the same platform as the American Accent sedan. A new generation has been under development for quite some time now and it seems Hyundai is about to reveal it. An undisguised production version of the 2014 i20 was just spotted two days ago in India and we have pictures to prove it.
A forum member of website Team BHP took these three clear shots of the new i20 from all angles. Essentially, it's a much better looking car than the current model, with a wide grille giving it sporty looks. At the back, wrap-around taillights and a sculpted bumper give an impression similar to the Kia pro_cee'd, which is no coincidence. A team led by designer Peter Schreyer was involved in the development of both these cars. The only thing we don't like about the new i20 are the blacked out C-pilars, which give off a fake sporty look.

So why is the i20 testing in India? Well, the smaller i10 was also developed there and it seems Hyundai is aggressively targeting this emerging market with cars tailored to local needs.

While the platform is likely to be all-new and lighter, the engines are likely going to carry over from the previous generation, with improvements in fuel economy and lower emissions, of course.Petrol engines should include the 1.2 Kappa and 1.4-liter engines, both mated to a 5-speed manual. The more powerful of the two will continue to be offered as an automatic. Depending on the market, diesels options will include a 1.1 three-cylinder and a 1.4-liter. We've learned that Hyundai is working on a small 3-cylinder turbo petrol, similar to the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, which will be ready for mass production by the end of 2015.

We expect the all-new Hyundai i20 to debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show in early October. The hatchback has already been confirmed as one of the candidates of the Car of the Year Awards and as such should go on sale by the end of 2014.
