The way Asian carmakers make their superminis has always seemed interesting to us. Some make shrunken cars that almost fit into the A-segment below, like the new Mitsubishi Mirage which replaced the Colt or Suzuki’s Swift. But Honda does the opposite and offers something with lots of practicality.
Their Jazz B-segment hatch is very relatively big and most importantly has 335 liters of boot space, basically class-leading capacity.

A whole new generation of Jazz, sold in the US as the Fit, will debut in Japan at the end of 2013 and in the rest of the world the following year. It’s an exciting new, built around new architecture that will also spawn Honda’s first B-segment SUV/crossover.

Thanks to indianautosblog.com, we won’t have to wait until the end of the year to see the new Jazz, as these Japanese scans which reveal the ins and outs of the car. The scans seem to come from the Japanese brochures, which often depict cars in every color combination possible on the same page.

The car has reportedly grown by 60mm (just over 2 inches) to 3,960mm while the wheelbase is 80 mm longer to create more legroom for passengers and improve the ride. But get this: the boot capacity is now 400 liters. That’s bigger than some cars in the class above!

Engine options will include 1.2-liter and 1.4-liter VTEC petrol engines with a six-speed auto available for the bigger of the two. European customers will also get the new 1.6-liter i-DTEC diesel with 120 hp. But the interesting and as-of-yet unrevealed part is that the photos seem to show a hybrid car as well.

Honda’s smallest hybrid engine is the 1.5-liter based system used by the Civic. This offers a combined 110 hp and because the block and head are aluminum alloy it should be light enough for the Jazz.

But perhaps the most important part is that this car looks good. The transparent nose from the previous Civic hatch is back and Honda has decided to offer two very bright neon colors. Although the shape of the car is largely boxy, there are curves where it counts.
