Alfa Romeos Will Be Built in US, Exported to Europe
Marchionne says that the delay until next year was caused because "we had to make sure they were lightweight, fast cars with Alfa powertrains." The CEO obviously refers to the 1.8-liter turbocharged engine that will go in the 4C and will deliver 300 hp.
But the most interesting statement he made was that Alfa Romeos will be built in US plants and will actually be exported to Europe: "I need to export to Europe from the U.S. The volumes I get here are how I reintroduce Alfa to Europe.”
This might mean that Marchionne realizes there won’t be sufficient demand for Alfa’s models in the US from the start, but they need to be made there in order to be priced competitively.
