We already had information that Mazda would be helping Alfa Romeo create a great rear-wheel driven roadster, as the two automakers entered a mutually-beneficial partnership, last year, in May. Now, it`s all official and we have additional information on the matter.
Now, both manufacturers have confirmed that the Alfa roadster is coming in 2015, as well as the fact that it will be built in Mazda's Hiroshima plant, in Japan. The aim is to create a global car with mass appeal, which will be based on the underpinnings of the next-generation Mazda MX-5, which is also due to make its debut around the same time.
The Alfa will get the characteristic Italian styling, as well as special engines, to set it apart from the Mazda offering. We expect the 1.8-liter turbocharged unit, currently found in the Giulietta QV, where it makes 230 hp, to be one of the engine options for the upcoming roadster.
This is excellent news for car lovers across the world, who have been waiting for a proper rear-wheel drive Alfa Rome roadster for many years, and all they had to contend with until now was the front- or all-wheel drive Spider and Brera models.
The roadster is just one model, of the nine new models planned to be introduced by 2016, as well as an important part of their incursion into the US.
